The itinerancy system of the ministry makes it difficult for a clergy spouse to maintain a career. That is, until Pamela Rowley, owner of A Virtual Solution, found a portable career as a Virtual Assistant (VA).
What is a Virtual Assistant? A Virtual Assistant (VA) is a highly trained micro business owner who provides administrative, and possibly personal, support to a handful of clients. Using phone, fax, email and other emerging technologies, a VA is able to provide this administrative support without having to be physically present in the client’s office. Everything is handled from the comfort of the VA’s home office.
When asked about her decision to enter this exciting new career field, Ms. Rowley stated, “Being the spouse of a minister, I know how difficult it is to maintain a career when your spouse is reappointed to a different church in a different city every few years. I also know from experience that sometimes the only choice, though not the ideal situation, is to maintain separate residences for the sake of job opportunities. For these reasons, my future plans are to use A Virtual Solution as the catalyst to promote the virtual assistant profession to other clergy spouses.”
Having worked in the life insurance industry for many years, Ms. Rowley hopes to primarily work with life insurance agents by following their applications through the underwriting process, thus giving the agent more time to service existing clients and to submit larger numbers of applications.
